# Yesterday, I had the honor of participating in the international Cross-Culture Mediation and Communication Insights 2026 meeting. The guest of the meeting was Hon. Ann Claire Williams (Ret.), Member of the Board of Directors of the Weinstein International Foundation Of Counsel at Jones Day, where she leads efforts to strengthen the rule of law in Africa.
Judge Ann Claire Williams is one of the most influential figures in contemporary justice. In 1999, she became the first African American woman appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, where she served until her retirement in 2018. Prior to that, she served as a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago.
Since retiring from the bench, she has been actively involved in international efforts to promote access to justice and the rule of law, working with courts, lawyers, non-governmental organizations, and the U.S. Departments of Justice and State. She has designed and conducted training programs in Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, among other countries.
As a member of the Board of Directors of the Weinstein International Foundation, she brings a unique global perspective combining:
the highest level of the judiciary,
mediation and amicable dispute resolution,
building the rule of law in an intercultural and international context.
A very enlightening meeting that opens your mind to many other perspectives.
I highly recommend mediation, arbitration, or simply negotiation. ADR can help us all learn to resolve disputes differently, more wisely, and more quickly without resorting to lengthy and costly litigation. There will always be time for that.
